Nitrocellulose ('nitro') lacquer is the classic vintage guitar and car lacquer.

It gives a very thin, flexible finish which enhances the natural colours of the wood and many claim gives a better sound when compared to other, thicker, less flexible finishes.

Nitrocellulose lacquer cracks and yellows as it ages, an effect that can be seen on many classic vintage guitars from the 50s and 60s. This effect can be recreated by forcing the lacquer to crack once it has set, and by using one of our tinted lacquers (for example the brown or amber) to give an instant aged colour to your finish.

Nitrocellulose lacquer can be used over cellulose paints to bring them to a gloss or satin finish. Our tinted light brown lacquer gives paints an instant relic discolouration, much quicker than waiting 50 years for the lacquer to naturally age!

Cellulose sanding sealer should be used on bare wood underneath our clear and tinted lacquers.

Colour Codes Explained

We assign a 5-digit colour code to each colour that our finishing products are available in.

Each colour code represents a specific colour in a specific material. For example, code CC020 is Heritage Cherry Red in Nitrocellulose Lacquer. Each colour is then available in a range of sizes, for example 250ml bottle, 1 litre bottle and 400ml aerosol. Each size has its own product code.

Some of our colours have the same name but are in a different material, and so have a different colour code. A good example of this is two colours with the same name, one in a Spirit Based Lightfast Wood Stain, one in a Water Based Wood Stain. In these cases we have tried to create the same colour in a range of different materials. However, due to the limitations of which pigments can be used in different materials it is not always possible to achieve an exact match. So, while two colours of the same name will be similar, we cannot guarantee absolute consistency across different materials.
