Nitrocellulose (nitro') lacquer is a classic finish used on many vintage guitars and cars.

While it starts off as a clear finish over time it yellows and cracks, giving that distinctive vintage nitro' appearance seen on so many old guitars from the 50s and 60s.

The Classic Vintage Finish

Used on guitars and cars in the first half of the 20th century, many people consider nitrocellulose to be the classic vintage finish. Its distinctive cracking and yellowing gives instruments a truly aged appearance and feel. Softer than other lacquers it wears away slightly over time exposing base coats and sometimes the bare wood in high-wear areas.

Using our range of clear and tinted nitrocellulose lacquers you can achieve both as-new and as-old effects, ranging from a pristine high gloss to a cracked chipped and worn relic look.

Coloured and Tinted Lacquers

We offer a range of coloured and tinted nitrocellulose lacquers for various uses. All of our colours are available both bottled, for use in spray guns, or in easy to use aerosol spray cans.

Our Light Brown (Tobacco) tinted lacquer is great for giving an instant aged/relic look to newly applied nitro' or other finishes - it saves you waiting years for the nitrocellulose to age and discolour naturally. Applying more will give a more pronounced aged effect. It can also go over paints and other lacquers to knock back their newness (for taking some of the brightness out of new maple, for example) and give an older feel to the instrument.

The Light Brown tinted lacquer can also be used with other colours to create a sunburst finish. It is great with our Dark Brown. Many of our other colours can be combined for brilliant sunburst effects, for example yellow-red-black, or out amber to orange. Because our tinted lacquers are translucent, not opaque, you can still see some of the grain through the sunburst finish.

An example of this is the yellow-red-black sunburst: the black takes on a very dark aubergine (eggplant) appearance instead of a stark black, just like the original Sunbursts.

Why use our tinted lacquers? Not only is our nitrocellulose lacquer exceptionally high quality, but our colours are also consistent - we take the guesswork out of spraying and tinting, and you can be confident that the tints you buy from us now will be the same a year in the future, allowing you to offer consistent finished products. This also applies to custom colours which we keep on record should you ever need a repeat order in the future.

Our standard range of colours are always in stock. We can also produce custom colours - please Contact Us with your requirements for more information.
